Secondary School Project

Latest Updates at a Glance
Enrollment for 2024 currently stands at 224 girls and 283 boys for a total of 507 learners! These numbers fluctuate as tests in Grades 8 & 10 determine who proceeds to the next grade. The cholera epidemic disrupted school calendars, delaying classes for 5 weeks. This shortened the term from 13 weeks to 11, with a one-week break instead of a month. The new solar lighting facilitates evening classes and study sessions. The mechanized water system works well, maintaining the school’s high sanitation standards.
  • School staffing now at 25 teachers
  • Approximately 507 learners
  • Four teachers are Beth's Ladies

Lumwana West Secondary School Project
The Lumwana West Secondary School Project is a transformative initiative that has reshaped the educational landscape of Lumwana West, Zambia. For years, students who completed their primary education faced a daunting challenge—continuing their studies required traveling long distances to the nearest secondary school. This limitation led to a high dropout rate, especially among young girls who often encountered additional barriers such as financial constraints and family expectations. Without accessible education, their potential remained untapped, and their dreams of higher learning were often left unfulfilled. Understanding the gravity of this challenge, the community of Lumwana West, in collaboration with EBZEF and the Zambian Ministry of Education, laid the groundwork for a secondary school that would change the course of countless lives. The project was officially launched in 2014, beginning with a strategic plan to create a learning institution that could cater to the educational needs of the growing student population.
Overcrowded Classroom
New Desks for Learners
From Vision to Reality
By 2016, construction of the first classroom block was completed, providing a physical foundation for the school. However, the work was far from finished. With an increasing number of students eager to continue their education, the school needed further expansion. Over the next several years, additional classrooms, science laboratories, teacher housing, and sanitation facilities were built to accommodate both students and faculty. By 2018, the school officially opened its doors, welcoming its first cohort of secondary school students—an achievement that signified a profound shift for the community. With time, more infrastructure was added, including boreholes to provide clean water, which was essential for both students and staff. As the institution grew, so did the support from the Zambian government, which began placing teachers and integrating the secondary school into the national curriculum. This partnership ensured that students were receiving a formal education that met national standards while being able to remain within their own community.
Empowering Students & Strengthening the Community
The impact of the Lumwana West Secondary School cannot be overstated. Prior to its existence, many students—especially young girls—were unable to pursue secondary education due to the logistical and financial burden of traveling long distances. The establishment of this school has led to higher graduation rates, allowing more students to pursue tertiary education and career opportunities that were once out of reach. The school has also played a vital role in the continued success of Beth’s Girls & Beth’s Ladies—students who receive educational support through EBZEF scholarships. Previously, these students would have needed to relocate to continue their studies, placing additional strain on their families. Now, they can complete their secondary education within their own community, surrounded by the support of their families and teachers.

Challenges & The Road Ahead
While the school has made great strides in transforming access to secondary education, several challenges remain. Overcrowding has become a pressing concern, as more students enroll each year. There is an urgent need for more classrooms to ensure that every student has access to a quality learning environment. Additionally, teacher housing remains limited, making it difficult to attract and retain qualified educators who are willing to work in rural areas. Expanding learning resources, such as textbooks, computers, and digital learning tools, is another key priority to enhance the quality of education being provided.
A Lasting Legacy
Despite these challenges, the Lumwana West Secondary School stands as a testament to what is possible when a community comes together with a shared vision for education. It is more than just a school—it is a beacon of opportunity, empowering young minds to build a brighter future for themselves and their families. Through continued community engagement, donor support, and investment in education, this school will remain a pillar of learning for generations to come.
The journey of building and expanding the Lumwana West Secondary School is far from over, but its impact is already visible in the success stories of its students. With each passing year, more young learners are stepping into classrooms that once seemed out of reach—ready to learn, grow, and shape a future filled with promise.
Third Three-Classroom Block Finished
  • “The construction of the new secondary school in Lumwana West is obviously the greatest gift of EBZEF to the community of Lumwana West. From 2017 to date, we currently have two staff houses, two 1x3 classroom blocks, and toilets for girls. EBZEF is still mobilising for more funds to construct more houses, classrooms and other structures that are necessary for a secondary school. The impact of the secondary school on the community of Lumwana West is massive.” Headmaster Njolomba
